KBA Competence:
the new compact platform
As a service provider with a strong customer focus, KBA addresses the diverse needs and preferences of the newspaper sector with two compact presses – the Cortina and the Commander CT. Both are based on our KBA Competence platform, with its exceptionally high level of automation. The Commander CT is the conventional alternative to the Cortina and was developed for newspaper publishers and contract printers who, for specific reasons (e.g. because they are extending existing wet offset press lines or have reservations concerning unfamiliar consumables) are not yet prepared to go waterless.
When configured with a heatset dryer the KBA Cortina can print both coldset newspapers and heatset semi-commercials using the same ink, eliminating the need for time-consuming changes of ink between coldset and heatset production. This reduces makeready to a minimum and makes press operation much easier. The KBA Cortina supports environmentally friendly production by minimising waste, eliminating fount solution, additives, gear oil and virtually all platemaking chemicals, and by cutting noise emissions. It thus pre-empts more rigorous laws and regulations governing emissions and the environment.
Common to both the Commander CT and the Cortina is the unique StepIn tower, which splits neatly down the centre at the touch of a button for maintenance access. Lifts on either side of the towers promote ergonomic operation and cut walking distances. Other joint features include our fast, highly reliable and practice-proven KBA PlateTronic automatic plate changers, thousands of which are already in operation; KBA RollerTronic automatic roller locks, whose functioning precision is far superior to other systems on the market; and our innovative KBA NipTronic cylinder bearings for optimum setting of the nip pressure.
The only difference between the Cortina and the Commander CT is the process by which they operate. The Cortina has no dampening units or ink keys, while the Commander CT has spray dampeners and film inking units with ink keys and three forme rollers.
