Leading Press Manufacturer Strikes New Benchmarks at Watershed Event

INNOVATION DRIVES KBA ‘SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE’ AT IPEX

KBA, the German press giant whose founding fathers invented the modern printing press nearly 200 years ago, is to signpost the future of the litho printing sector with a raft of performance-enhancing innovations on its 800m2 stand in Hall 6 at Ipex 2010.
In an era of intense competition, challenges from emerging technologies, escalating input costs and increasing environmental concerns, the sector’s technology pathfinder has developed the cutting-edge solutions it believes will deliver the production efficiencies that will secure the place of litho offset printing at the hub of the communications mix well into the future.

KBA RAPIDA 106-6+L
Visitors will be able to see the future of offset print demonstrated on the flagship KBA RAPIDA 106-6+L higher performance B1 press. Under the banner ‘Champions in Print’ KBA will demonstrate, for the first time in the UK, the Simultaneous Plate Changing (SPC) technology that helped set consecutive makeready records at Drupa 08 and then Print 09 and, for the first time in the world at any print trade event, the groundbreaking Flying JobChange system that allows plates to be changed on dormant units while a job is still in print on the same press. On show, too, are the latest generations of the image quality and content integrity control systems essential if printers are to realise the full potential of reduced downtimes and higher production speeds. As well as the unique PlateIdent and DensiTronic PDF systems, KBA will also use the UK event to unveil its new inline measurement and control system; QualiTronic Color Control Instrument Flight®, developed in conjunction with System Brunner of Switzerland, prioritises grey balance values and creates a closed-loop system for measuring and controlling colour during impression to guarantee optimum colour fidelity from one sheet to the next, from one day to the next and from one press to another.

KBA GENIUS 52UV
In the B3 format, the aptly-named KBA GENIUS 52UV is an astonishing printing system that further illustrates KBA’s technological pedigree. With its unique combination of single impression cylinder, keyless inking, anilox rollers and in-line UV it prints virtually any substrate with incredible accuracy and colour vibrancy, making it a popular solution for printing plastic cards, mouse mats, stickers and lenticular films as well as paper stocks and card. The GENIUS also appeals to digital houses looking to expand their offering on stock ranges and run lengths because the print quality on the sheet is driven by pre-press, there are no registration or colour density issues and it makes ready in five minutes – typically requiring just seven run-up sheets to achieve saleable results.

KBA RAPIDA 75-5+L
The RAPIDA 75 is the newcomer to the KBA stable; first shown at Drupa 08, it benefits from a long line of experience in the B2 sector combined with many of the performance features developed for KBA’s larger format series presses. It is showing in a 5-colour configuration with coater and extended delivery, automated plate changing, inking unit temperature control, roller and blanket washing systems, and KBA ErgoTronic console with JDF interface. Its exceptionally compact footprint and lowest power consumption in its class with headline performance credentials... a customer print test recently produced seven 300-sheet jobs in 55 minutes and eleven in 91 minutes. Among the new features showing on the Ipex machine are developments in the feeder, sheet grippers, air blowers, delivery sheet brake, transfer cylinders (without drum shells), automatic format presetting and remote maintenance facility.

RAPIDA 105-5+L
Completing the live press line-up is a RAPIDA 105-5+L high performance B1 press noted for its absolute reliability and flexibility and with a peerless performance record in the commercial, book, label and packaging sectors. The RAPIDA 105 is a straight press available with up to seven units and coating; options available include many of the quality control and automation features familiar to the RAPIDA series to create a reliable and proven mainstream production platform.

WEB PRESSES
KBA will launch the brand new C16 16pp web press at IPEX with efficiency boosting features such as rapid plate-change, high net output, ultra-quick make-readies and low levels of start-up waste via KBA EasyTronic software. Available in two performance classes - 55,000and 65,000cph - it combines enhanced production flexibility and reduced operator, energy and maintenance input with outstanding value for money. KBA's time and energy saving innovations include the fastest plate change in its class (less than 60 seconds irrespective of the number of units), dedicated AC drives for each printing couple and optional 'flying' job change imprinter technology.
Specialists will also be on hand with updates on the revolutionary technologies for the Cortina and Commander CT presses that include PlateTrans, an automated system for conveying the plates from pre-press.

KBA Complete
Workflow optimisation with KBA Complete and Logica Sistemi
KBA’s commitment to open architecture in integrated workflow solutions will be demonstrated within a virtual production environment by independent consultants from KBA Complete and partners from Hiflex and Logica Sistemi. The solutions demonstrated will include networking the RAPIDA presses with MIS via KBA LogoTronic professional and scenarios that cover digital print, sheetfed and web offset applications.
